GAVINO MARIOTTI ELECTED AS THE NEW RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SASSARI

Gavino Mariotti is the new Rector of the University of Sassari, being elected for the 2020/2026 six-year mandate. He earned 366 votes during the second voting round, followed by Gian Paolo Demuro (188) and Luca Deidda (125). He is the first Rector of the University of Sassari to be elected via remote voting. The quorum was 349 votes (half of eligible voters plus one).

Professor Gavino Mariotti's work achievements

Gavino Mariotti has served as a Professor of Economic and Political Geography at the University of Sassari since 2010. His early research topic focused on mining-related environmental issues. He then expanded it by exploring the economic outcomes of local development. He carried out research on the how tourism affected the local territory, focusing on the recovery and development of the inland areas of Sardinia, as well as cartographic aspects related to tourism. His research has recently focused on the analysis of territorial competitiveness. Since 2015, he has chaired the "Environment and Territory - Data Analysis" Lab at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (University of Sassari) where both research and education are carried out on geography, the Environment, the local territory and social fabric, cartography and historical geography. Since 2020, he has served as a member of the "Route – Geografia dei trasporti e del turismo (TAB Edizioni)" scientific board.

He has served on the Board of Directors and the Academic Senate of the University of Sassari on several occasions. From 1996 to 2002, he served as a Board Member of the Regional Agency for the Right to Study (ERSU), being elected by the Regional Council of Sardinia.

From 2012 to 2016 he served as the Director of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Voters' (virtual) turnout

no candidate was elected. While during the first round five candidates run for rectorship, today only three of them continued their journey, as a result of the Roberto Furesi's and Plinio Innocenzi's withdrawal.  Also, during the second round, the voters' turnout was quite remarkable: 92.39% of eligible voting students (85 out of 92); 89.48% of eligible voting clerical staff members (451 out of 504); 98.37% of eligible voting faculty (603 out of 613). 1139 polling cards were submitted.

The results were announced live via web streaming on the UNISS official website by Chair of the Electoral Panel Professor Andrea Montella. Professor Gavino Mariotti was present at the time of the official communication and commented: "It's a special emotional moment for me. I wish to thank all the people who worked during these two busy days. I wish to thank those who supported me. I will work in the interest of the university and bring serenity within these walls."
