AOU Sassari, the University Hospital of Sassari, was established on April 27, 2007 and has been operational since July 3, 2007. The hospital's goal is the development of a single and coordinated health care service, in addition to providing training and research opportunities.

It was established on April 27, 2007 by Decree of the Regional Council (Delibera della Giunta Regionale) no. 17/2, pursuant to articles 1 and 18 of the Regional Law No. 10 of 28 April 2006 and in implementation of the memorandum of understanding approved by the Regional Council, with Resolution No. 38/5 of 16 February 2004, and signed by the Region and by the University of Cagliari and Sassari in October 11, 2004.

These documents set out the principles for an effective collaboration between the Region and the University system and govern the carrying out of sanitary and health activities, complemented by the University coordination of vocational training and research.
The University Hospital of Sassari, therefore, is the reference institution of the University of Sassari for all health-related activities, which are essential for the carrying out of the institutional training and research activities coordinated by the School of Medicine.

Mission and principles

The University Hospital of Sassari delivers and develops research and education/training by complementing them with specialized health-related services.
It promotes innovation, pursues a user/patient/student-oriented approach and favours the enhancement of professional experience through the sharing of objectives and accountability on the outcomes.

The surgery macro-unit

The Surgery Macro-unit includes surgical units which carry out elective surgery. Within the macro-unit, planned surgeries are performed both on inpatients and outpatients.
The Macro-unit performs diagnosis and treatment of planned surgical pathology and emergency surgery patients with particular attention to neoplastic pathology.

The spearhead unit is minimally invasive surgery (Laporoscopic Surgery).
The different operating units which belong to the  Macro-unitare organized in multidisciplinary work-groups. These groups involve surgeons of other fields and, in some cases, from other national and international hospitals and Universities.

The goal is to develop diagnostic–therapeutic services complying with the principles of appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency, through the introduction of criteria intended for a correct management of waiting lists.

The macro-unit includes the following fields:

  • Medical centers - Day-Surgery

As a whole, the Macro-unit has 242 beds, including 8 beds for Day-Surgery patients and 234 beds for inpatients.

Clinical activities are complemented with training and research initiatives.

Maternal and Child Care

The Maternal anc Child Care Macro-unit provides key health care services for the whole Provincial area. It promotes health and care, and improves the life quality of mothers and children, which is a priority health objective worldwide.
The key objectives of the Macrostructure is to ensure effective 24/7 emergency care in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology and child care, coordinating different hospital wards. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic provides support at all stages of the clinical treatment through a network of skilled professionals which make it possible to meet all health-related needs and provide an effective care.

It also ensures the protection of women's health at all stages of life, with particular reference to all possible expressions of sexuality, responsible parental choices, including the voluntary termination of pregnancy, support at birth, general pregnancy care, prevention and treatment of maternal fetal pathologies.
The Macro-unit the following units:

  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic,
  • Paediatric Clinic,
  • Paediatric Surgery Clinic,
  • Neonatal Care Clinic,
  • Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
  • Division of Infectuous Pediatric Diseases,
  • Child Neuropsychiatry Institute

As a whole, the Macro-unit has 148 beds, including 8 beds for Day-Hospital patients and 140 beds for inpatients.
Clinical activities are complemented with training and research initiatives.

  • Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care

  • Child Neuropsychiatry

Medicine

The activity of the Medicine Macro-unit is devoted to complex patients suffering from a number of pathologies (heart, endocrine-metabolic, cancer-related, respiratory, immuno-rheumatologic and liver-related diseases), requiring various clinical skills in different fields of functional clinical care.
In addition to inpatient activities, it offers a wide range of outpatient services reflecting the Organization of the Department, offering outpatient care when needed.
The modern technical equipment and the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach, make it possible to pursue a clinical approach focusing on a multidisciplinary perspective when taking care of a patient.

As a whole, the Macro-unit has 185 beds, including 10 beds for Day-Hospital patients and 175 beds for inpatients.
