The first part of the course will focus on few selected examples of animal infectious disease, particularly difficult to diagnose, treat and prevent. Bacterial and viral infections will be described focusing the difficulties found in controlling them. The interactions of specific pathogens with animal immune system will be stressed in order to underline the need of innovative tools designed to improve diagnosis and prevention. During the last practical part of the course students will be sorted in small groups. Each group will select an infectious disease from the OIE list in order to design a biotech product. Each group will work online and will learn how to retrieve information from dedicated websites, from reference laboratories and databanks, such as NCBI and EMBO. During guided activities, students will learn how to approach and use bio-informatic tools (Bioedit, Clustall W, etc.). Eventually groups will present their results and products to each other.
