Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the skills needed to evaluate and explot the potential of wild or genetically modified organisms in the production of goods and services. At the end of the course the students will acquire the scientific knowledge required to: select and improve microbial biocatalysts; understand the organization of the biotechnological process; increase the productivity of biotechnological processes.

Contents

Biodiversity and ecology of microorganisms of biotechnological interest. Isolation selection and genetic manipulation of microorganisms. Genetics and physiology of yeast of biotechnological interest. Fermentation technologies. Bioreactors. Batch and continuous fermentative processes. Kinetics of microbial growth and of metabolites production. Biotechnological parameters of fermentative process. Production of microbial biomass, ethanol, antibiotics, enzymes, recombinant proteins.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures and tutorials and laboratory classes. Most of the topics are presented as schemes and figures organized in form of power point presentation. The remaining topics are approached through the critical reading of scientific papers.
