Assessment Methods

Verification of learning:

Internal medicine large animals: practica examl with clinical approach to a sick large animal.
Internal medicine small animals: practical exam with clinical approach to a sick dog or cat or horse,
Medicina legale, deontologia, benessere animale e zooantropologia: theoretical/ practical oral test with the proposal of expert evaluations on the various topics of the lessons, stimulating the student's curiosity to investigate further.
The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the topics covered. The student must demonstrate that they are able to apply the knowledge in practical clinical practice by managing a clinical case through the POA method or solving forensic cases.
The student must demonstrate autonomy of judgment in assessing the state of health of an animal.
The student will have to demonstrate communication skills with colleagues or other people, and the ability to express themselves with appropriate terminology.
The student will have to demonstrate learning skill, in field to internal medicine and legal medicine, with autonomy of study and desire to deepen his knowledges.

Objectives

The “internal medicine” course aims to provide students with the right method of observation and clinical approach to a sick animals (ruminants, horses, pets). The aim is achieved using to the Problem Oriented Approach (POA): obtain an accurate and relevant history of the individual animal or animal group, and its/their environment (Day One Competence 1.15); handle and restrain animal patients safely and with respect of the animal, and instruct others in helping the veterinarian perform these techniques (Day One Comp 1.16); perform a complete clinical examination and demonstrate ability in clinical decision-making (Day One Comp 1.17); collect, preserve and transport samples, select appropriate diagnostic tests, interpret and understand the limitations of the test results (Day One Comp 1.21) fill out medical record; develop appropriate treatment plans and administer treatment in the interests of the animals under their care with regard to the resources available and in accordance with legislation and latest guidance (Day One Comp 1.18; 1.26).
The educational objective of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge of the set of principles, rules and habits that every veterinarian must observe and which must inspire him in the exercise of the profession, understanding the economic and emotional context in which he operates. (1.7 Day One Comp). The student will acquire the theoretical-practical contents of what are the prerogatives related to the human-animal relationship and the positive and negative effects that this can determine. These skills related to the canine species will serve to prevent and to know how to evaluate situations of abuse and to prevent accidents related to coexistence with this species. The student will also acquire the skills to study animal welfare through the evaluation of the relationship between breeding, behavior and metabolic parameters. Particular attention will be paid in the course of teaching pets whether they live in a family context or inside kennels and animals inside circuses. A further goal is to give the student the ability to understand the veterinarian's ethical and legal responsibilities in relation to the animals under his care, the environment, customers, policies and society (1.1 Day One Comp). Will acquire the ability to apply the principles of risk management to veterinary practice (1.3 Day One Comp). You will acquire the ability to communicate effectively with clients, the public, professional colleagues and responsible authorities, using appropriate language and in full respect of confidentiality and privacy (1.4 Day One Comp). The aim of the course is to provide the ability to contribute to the advancement of veterinary knowledge and the concept of One Healt in order to improve animal health and welfare, the quality of care and prevention and public health. Teaching Methods

Theoretical activities take place in lecture rooms with Power Point Presentations. The aim of theoretical lessons is to provide students with the right method of observation and clinical approach to a sick animal, according to the scheme procedural oriented approach to the problem (POA)
Practical activities take place in Veterinary Teaching Hospital or outside (farms, shelter).
Students in groups manage clinical cases themselves using POA. Students obtain an accurate and relevant history of the individual animal or animal group, and its/their environment; perform a complete clinical examination; suggest differential diagnosis and select appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging procedures; develop appropriate treatment plans and administer treatment in accordance with legislation and latest guidance. During practical activities students are supervised and guided by the professor.
At the end of the course the student acquires the required one day competences.
