The course aims to:
a) offer a general framework of the subject;
b) examine the relationship between space and society;
c) focus on the sociological approach to risk, uncertainty, insecurity, unsafety;
d) analyse the urban space by applying the methods of social research and the approach of the sociology of places.

• Knowledge and understanding:
Students will acquire basic notions of the subject, with specific reference to the relationship between human and spatial dimensions. In detail, students will gain expertise both in interpreting social phenomena and urban issues related to risk and security/safety and in applying social research methodology for empirical analysis of socio-territorial phenomena.
• Applying knowledge and understanding:
Field research and analysis of urban social phenomena will give students the opportunity to empirically apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired.
• Making judgements:
All sociological pieces of knowledge will only be constructed in order to provide students with the ability of making their own judgements regarding socio-spatial issues, with specific reference to territorial risk and security.
• Communication skills:
Communicative skills will be improved both by making students able to make use of a sociological language and through a constant interaction with the teacher and colleagues during classes and within group activities.
• Learning skills:
Students will be given theoretical, methodological and linguistic tools, which will let them develop new skills and knowledge over time on sociological issues.
