Objectives

The course aims at teaching how to:
- read urban changes and the effect of transport planning choices on people behaviors and the quality of urban life (with special attention on life styles, ways of living the city and the configuration of urban space and services at different scales)
- make students aware of the quality and values of urban space and the ways to integrate these issues in city planning as essential design requirements
- developing students ability of integrated analysis and design starting from a real context of study
- recognising and building consistent relationships between urban land use and transports

Contents

-Diachronic evolutions of theoretical approach to transport planning: from a sectorial attitude towards multidisciplinarity
-Recent advancement: The sustainable mobility paradigm. Environmental sustainability, livability and health in transport and mobility planning
- norms, policies and planning instruments for implementing the integrated transport and land use approach
-Integrated land use and transport policies. Principles, scope and experiences
-from segregation to coexistence of roads space users: design principles and case studies
- the design of mobility space and transport services for the improvement of urban life quality
- public transport systems planning and design principles

Teaching Methods

A permanent bidiretional exchange of knowledge between teachers and students characterises the whole educational activity with the aim of supporting the learning process making pupils effectively involved and interested.
Lectures and design labs together with seminars and practice exercises concerning specific topics that come to light during the project activity.
Labs topics will be selected and developed together with the others teachers and tutores involved in the semester.
Students first grouped in team and then individually work on a project theme referred to a specific urban context. In this way the class experiences the learning by doing approach.
During the design lab mobility issues are considered at different levels as essential part of the city planning organisation and students become aware practically of the influence of mobility planning decisions on the quality of urban life.

Other information and materials will be given during the lectures.
During the lectures and design lab foreign students will have the possibility to communicate in English with professor Congiu. It will be possible to take the final exam in English language as well.
English bibliography and teaching materials will be given. French documents will be available on request.
