Objectives

The aims of the course include the development of basic knowledge of pedology and the subsequent acquisition of methodological capability and means to evaluate relationships between processes of urban development of the past, the land, natural environment and geoarchaeology. Such means will also lead to the development of an ability to evaluate relationships between planning, suitability of actions for modifications of parts of land representing both the current pedological environment and its relationship with past civilizations, also seen in relation with the current.

Contents

Geoarchaeology in relation to planning: examples of actual sites. Definition of pedology in relation to the course contents. Concepts of sediments and soil. Soil horizons, relationships with landscape and topography. Basic concepts of soil classification. Visual, physical and chemical characters of soils and their horizons. Basics on organic matter. Introduction on soil drainage in relation to topography. Clays and other soil minerals in relation to land stability. Soil classification. Soil weathering and transformation/evolution with time. Paleosols. Definition of methods for soil investigation, with some practical applications. Soil micromorphology

The course includes 54 hours of frontal classes, written and applicative practicals. Individual seminars and interactive discussion. Development of arguments and discussion of practical examples. Possible excursion. Consultation of suggested reading.
