Assessment Methods

Verification of learning:

Revisions during the project workshop; interaction during the lessons, final exam with presentation of the results of the project workshop. The course of Urban Planning involves also passing the exam theory. The course of Plan and Project involves a verification of the theoretical knowledge, with particular reference to the contents of the text or texts assigned according to the chosen project theme / site . In particular, will be evaluated the capacity:
- to compare and to synthesise the disciplinary contributions and different points of view;
- to organize, argue and communicate thoughts;
- to recognize correspondences and build coherence frameworks between different aspects of the city starting from the objectives assumed.

Objectives

The Plan and Projects module concludes the three-year training course. The educational objectives are varied and different.
The module is aimed at testing the emerging themes of the debate on the city through the urban project and provides the students with the elements to interpret and operate a critical reflection on the effectiveness of programs and instruments of territorial governance in relation to territorial transformations to different operating scales.
In this sense, students are encouraged to reinterpret, re-elaborate and deepen their knowledge and skills, making use of contributions (theoretical and practical) that tend to “deviate” constructively from the mainstream approaches.
In terms of knowledge and understanding (1), at the end of the course the students will have acquired the skills oriented to:
- the acquisition of the basic elements at the conceptual and technical level, to interpret and to analyze a context and its organization, in relation to the territorial and the local dimension;
- the knowledge and the ability to use the main methods and tools for acquisition, interpretation and representation of knowledge to operate in urban and territorial contexts.
In terms of applying knowledge and understanding (2) the students will be able to:
- identify and explore the processes, resources, stakeholders, problematic fields and potentials of the territory, as highlighted in the main regional and urban planning tools, through the analysis of the cognitive framework and the recognition of the available information assets (e.g. plans and projects);
- represent the analysed processes, both graphically and through requirements and appropriate summary indicators;
The module focuses on the theme of urban regeneration practices, starting from the recent experiences on suburbs and the design interpretations in the regional and national field. Particular attention is paid to the theme of the promotion of accessibility, supported by the course of Transportation, which is investigated taking into consideration the various possible interpretations and the different scales of intervention.
Finally, the module is organized so as to encourage the immediate transferability of the concepts acquired in the planning / laboratory activity. In this way, students experience the possibility of "translating" the concepts into project forecasts and checking their preparation gradually.
In terms of making judgements (3) the students will have acquired the skills for:
- the interpretation of the processes analyzed, framing them in the specific reference context;
- the definition of the system of physical connections (environmental, infrastructural, etc.) and perceptive connections between the intervention area, the organization of services and facilities, both traditional, and innovative services (from social housing to mobility) and value destinations of contexts characterized by low quality living conditions.
In terms of communication skills (4) the students will be able to:
- operate in the context of diverse working groups based on the interdisciplinary contribution required by the various analyzes to arrive at a synthesis in the representation of the studied processes, both graphically and through appropriate requirements and the relative indicators;
In terms of learning skills (5) the students will have acquired the skills:
- to plan and to evaluate possible scenarios for consistent spatial organization (forms of living, networks, mobility, infrastructures and services, public spaces);
- Rethinking from a physical and functional point of view the system of connections and forms of living that provide supporting and inclusive actions for all.

Contents

The Plan and Project module sets the territorial government and the planning tools at different scales as a learning objective. Particular attention has been paid to national and international urban redevelopment programs and project experiences.
In this sense, the module aims to deepen the knowledge acquired by students in relation to theoretical assumptions, objectives and practices of transformation and governance, and, at the same time, students are encouraged to reinterpret critically these knowledge, both through the study of the urban and regional planning tools, both through the study of the fundamental contribution of urban planners, architects, scholars who have taken a critical stance towards the conventional approaches of the plan and project disciplines, and through the exploration of some current "minor" strands aimed at promoting primarily the quality of urban life of the most vulnerable individuals.

In addition to a series of traditional lectures, students are involved in some workshops with the aim of consolidating the concepts learned and exploring the possibilities of applying these concepts in the definition and evaluation of urban policies and projects.
The project workshop of the common module is supported by the course of Transportation and it is organized into two phases during which the students will be invited to elaborate a project proposal.
1st phase: Identification of the themes and contexts of work, that are chosen according to the students’requests and attitudes in relation to the territorial contexts. They constitute the field of application of the teachings and evaluation of the interventions with reference to the framework of the instruments and the regulations.
Initially, students will work in small groups (4-5 members maximum), each of which elaborate a critical analysis of the assigned topic / place and a first intervention proposal (masterplan).
2nd phase: In the next phase, students will have to work individually to define one or more project scenarios referred to the territorial context investigated, through the evaluation of the intervention opportunities offered by the tools, the redevelopment / enhancement programs of the areas, the regulatory framework, the projects and the experiences analyzed.
In order to make it possible to coherence of the individual projects elaborated individually with the respective collective action proposals, meetings are organized that involve all the members of the groups.
The timing, contents and methods of ongoing verification of the knowledge / skills acquired by students are defined in close collaboration among the teachers of the "Plan and Project" module and Transportation course.

Teaching Methods

A permanent bi-directional exchange of knowledge between teachers and students characterises the whole educational activity with the aim of supporting the learning process making students effectively involved and interested.
Lectures and project workshop together with seminars and practice exercises concerning specific topics that come to light during the project activity.
Project workshop topics (see also the "content" section) will be selected and developed together with the others teachers and tutores involved in the semester.
Students first grouped in team and then individually work on a project theme referred to a specific urban context. In this way the students experience the learning by doing approach.
During the project workshop, issues are considered at different levels as essential part of the city planning organisation and students become aware practically of the importance of accessibility to urban opportunities on the quality of urban life.
Presentations prepared by the teachers, in the form of literature articles, lecture notes, etc. will be made available online in the Department's e-learning platform, also available for non-attending students.
