A basic knowledge of General Mirobiology and Virology, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology is highly recommended before entering this Course.

Objectives

The aims of the Course are:
PART I, Applied Microbiology
- To gain knowledge in the field of gene cloning in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, with a special focus on the prodcution of recombiant proteins in different microbial systems.
- To gain knowledge on the manipulation of gene expression and genome editing, with a special focus on CRISPR/CAS technology.
PART II, Applied Virology
The student will gain knowledge on:
- General biology of viruses
- Relevant viral pathologies
- Techniqus of viral manipulation for the setup of therapeutics
- Setup of antiviral vaccines

Contents

PART I: APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY
- DNA transfer in bacteria and eukaryotic cells: electroporation, transormation, transfection.
- Vectors for gene cloning and production of recombiannt proteins in bacterual and eukaryotic background (E.c oli, P. Pastoris, baculovirus). Purification of recombinant proteins.
- In vitro mutagenesis
- NGS and RNAseq
- Protein-protein interactions: yeast two-hybrid system.
- Recombinant antibodies: phage display.
- Genetic manipulations in plants: Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
- Biological pest control: Bacillus thuringiensis
- Applications of RNAi technology
- CRISPR/CAS technology and genome editing
PART II: APPLIED VIROLOGY
- General virology: classificaiton and structure.

- Pathogenesis of viral infections
