No prerequisite knowledge is required in order to attend the lectures and to take the final exam. It is considered useful a basic knowledge of general sociology.

Objectives

The course aims to provide theoretical and empirical knowledge in the field of Sociology of ethnic relations and to analyze some specific problems in a theoretical and comparative perspective. Concepts such as ethnicity, citizenship, "sociability" will be used as analytical tools to understand the discourses and practices related to the complex question of "living together”.

Contents

The program will focus on the following issues:
Migration and globalization. The formation of ethnic minorities. The social and institutional construction of ethnic differences and the figure of the migrant. The ideology of assimilation, multiculturalism, citizenship and transnationalism. Social cohesion, integration of ethnic minorities, regulation of inter-ethnic coexistence. The social construction and transformation of identity. Discrimination and racism.

The course is based on students' active partecipation. Moreover, the discussion about some topics will be enriched by the participation of experts and scholars.
