ANCIENT TOPOGRAPHY
Written assignment to be completed in two hours in the classroom, with eventual discussion. The evaluation takes into account: participation in discussions, ability to integrate the topics discussed in class into the project, depth of the preparation and maturity of a critical reflection.
The course aims to achieve a framework as clear as possible of the characters of a historical context, given the difficulty of finding someone who is not. But also try to substantiate not so much the answers, as the questions that the project should ask to history, to clarify whether they can be limited to individual objects or they have to investigate the historical "processes" who have invested, over time, territories, cities , landscapes and, even more, their intersections, vertical and horizontal. Finally: to overcome the well-established view that a historical context is a container of "old" objects particularly evident and, possibly, physically well preserved.
The course offers a series of inter-related themes that, in a modular system of presentation, follow a line of reasoning articulated in a dual path: design "in the" historical context and design "the" historical context: monographical lessons on historical themes of general character, fwhich inspire further lectures and discussions in the classroom and in the laboratory, having as their core subjects close to the projectual practice.
Main topics:
"Romulus, Remus and large cities". Idea of the city: birth and death
"The power of images". Athens and Rome
"Modern History of the Forum in Rome"
Design “in the” historical context and design “the” historical context: exemplifications from the project context
