METALLIC AND CERAMIC MATERIALS
Although no formal prerequisite are mandatory, knowledge of the topics treated in the courses of Physical Chemistry and Structural Chemistry and Quantum Spectroscopy are required.

Objectives

ELECTROCHEMISTRY AND CONDUCTING POLYMERS
The purpose of the course is a general knowledge on main features of electrogenerated conducting polymers and on electrochemical synthesis and characterization techniques. At the end of the course the student will have gained knowledge on the electrochemical synthesis and characterization of conducting polymers.

METALLIC AND CERAMIC MATERIALS
Objective of the course is to teach some basic aspects and the more recent results of research activity concerning the materials science with special emphasis to metallic and ceramic systems. At the end of the course the student will have gained knowledge related to structural, thermodynamics, mechanical properties, synthesis routes and chemical reactivity of different materials, mainly related to metallic, multicomponent alloy, ceramic and oxide systems.

Contents

ELECTROCHEMISTRY AND CONDUCTING POLYMERS
Conducting Polymers: theory of conductivity; conduction mechanism; poly(acetylene), poly(pyrrole), poly(thiophene). Electrochemical synthesis. Applications (LEDs, solar cells, biosensors).

METALLIC AND CERAMIC MATERIALS
Structural defects in solids: simple and linear defects, vacancies, dislocations. Steady and unsteady diffusion mechanisms, Fick's laws. Mechanical properties of metals and alloys, stress-strain behaviour, elastic and plastic deformation. Dislocations and mechanical properties. Yield: fracture, fatigue, stress and temperature effects. Phase diagrams and Gibbs free energy curves. Fe-C system, bimetallic alloys, bulk glass materials, multicomponent systems. Phase transformations and structural evolution.
