STRATEGY AND COMPANY GOVERNANCE
Oral examination
The minimum grade requires the demonstration of an elementary knowledge of the basic notions relevant to the topic dealt with while the maximum grade requires the correct use of the analytical tools used in the lesson a good expository logic combined with a good command of the language.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The course is aimed at deepening principles and techniques which characterize business strategy and policies. Starting from the most relevant theories about strategic management, the constituents of business strategies, the different visions of the concept of strategy, the main decision making methodologies, the definition of the strategic boundary, the formulation, the implementation and the control of a strategy will be analyzed, also using the case-study approach. Finally the most recent theories, with a focus on the enlarged system of value creation theory, will be analyzed. This course is aimed to develop specific competences and skills in order to support strategic management processes of a firm
At the end of the course the student will have acquired:
(1) Knowledge and ability to understand; to know the spectrum of strategic decisions and the main reference paradigms; to understand principles and logic that supervise both corporate strategy and government choices; to know the main techniques of analysis, strategic planning and problem solving;
(2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: be in the position to use strategic analysis methods and tools to support government decisions;
(3) Autonomy of judgment: ability to analyze corporate strategy also in temporal and spatial comparative analysis; ability to evaluate the effectiveness and coherence of strategic choices;
(4) Communication skills: the student will work in the context of working groups and will be able to prepare and present in the classroom case studies based on specific issues of corporate strategy, using PowerPoint.
(5) Learning skills: the critical and conceptual legacy of teaching will foster the use of the skills acquired in managerial roles within public and private organizations, as well as in business consulting.
The evolution of managerial theories: from scientific management to situational school; strategic management versus operational management; the concept of business strategy: definitions compared; the strategic structure of the company; the concept of SBU; the hierarchy of strategic elaboration (corporate, SBU level, functional strategies); the role of the strategic orientation in planning processes (mission versus vision); evaluation of the strategic structure and portfolio strategies; BCG Matrix; Porter 5 forces model; Strategic planning: principles and tools; SWOT analysis; the Business model; the value chain; main competitive strategies; the Resource Based View; Learning theories; different types of strategy; diversification strategies; social strategies; the economy of reconfiguration: a new strategic paradigm; the enlarged systems of value creation

Esame orale: il voto minimo richiede la dimostrazione di una conoscenza elementare delle nozioni di base pertinenti rispetto al tema affrontato mentre il voto massimo richiede l'uso corretto degli strumenti analitici utilizzati a lezione, una buona logica espositiva unita a una discreta padronanza della lingua.
I lavori di gruppo verranno valutati in relazione al grado di originalità e di approfondimento teorico delle tematiche trattate, alla capacità di sintesi, alla brillantezza e alla chiarezza espositiva. Il voto assegnato ai singoli partecipanti, ai fini della valutazione complessiva dell’esame, è ottenuto attraverso la ponderazione dell’impegno individuale valutato dagli altri partecipanti attraverso questionari anonimi. La valutazione finale terrà conto del voto conseguito nei lavori di gruppo e della prova orale.
