Objectives

Premising that the statistical analyses carried out on samples coming from larger population. are an important tool to support economic and financial decisions, the first module of the course has a triple objective: to strengthen the knowledge of inference acquired during the course of Statistics, to give an application of statistical methods to business cases, learn to use the spreadsheet for basic statistical processing.

At the end of the course, student will have acquired:
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND: knowledge of statistical inference elements, ability to understand the appropriate statistical tools for the analysis of the economic-business phenomenon.
- ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND TO UNDERSTAND: knowing how to recognize and apply the basic tools for statistical analysis; to be able to analyze and interpret the results of the analysis. Knowing how to use the spreadsheet for statistical analyzes.
- JUDGMENT SKILLS: being able to assess whether the applied statistical method is adequate for the study of the phenomenon.
- COMMUNICATION SKILLS: knowing how to create a report in which methods and results are presented in a rigorous manner.
- LEARNING SKILLS: In conjunction with the Statistics course, the module should facilitate the in-depth study of the statistical methods proposed in the context of advanced specialist courses.

Contents

- Recall on continuous random variable: definition of continuous random variable, distribution functions, probability density functions, expected value and variance, normal, normal standard, normal probability plot, uniform distribution, exponential distribution, distribution joint of two random variables;
- Sampling and sampling distributions: sampling from a population, distribution of the sample mean, distribution of the sample variance
- Estimator, estimate, properties of the estimators.
- Confidence intervals for the mean (known and unknown variance) of a normally distributed population, confidence intervals for the difference between the means of two populations with normal joint distribution (dependent samples or independent samples).
- Hypothesis testing - Review of the basic concepts of hypothesis testing, test on the sample mean coming from a normally distributed population (known and unknown variance), hypothesis testing on the difference between the means , hypothesis testing on the variance of a normal population, verifying the equality of the variances of two normally distributed populations
- Simple linear regression. Recall on the correlation analysis. Review of the least squares method. Inference on the parameters of the regression model. Visual inspection of the residuals
