Verification of learning:

The evaluation consists of establishing the acquired knowledge on the basis of the defined educational objectives.
As a general rule, the exam is a colloquium concerning the topics terated during the lessons and the results of laboratory activities. It can be completely (or partially) replaced by the results of the written tests which will be permitted only to students that regularly have attended lessons.

Objectives

The course aims to provide an updated overview of the controlled-potential electroanalytical techniques, and of their applications, in particular to the synthesis and characterization of electrogenerated conducting polymers. At the end of the course students will have gained skills related to: 1) general aspects and applications of the principal controlled-potential electroanalytical techniques, 2) the main features of conducting polymers, and their electrochemical synthesis and characterization.

Contents

Electrochemical cells, polarization, overpotential, iR drop, electrochemical devices, two- and three-electrodes circuitation, reversibility in electrode processes, mass transfer to the electrode. Cronoamperometry, polarography, voltammetry, stripping methods.
Conducting Polymers: theory of conductivity; conduction mechanism; poly(acetylene), poly(pyrrole), poly(thiophene). Electrochemical synthesis. Applications (LEDs, solar cells, biosensors).

Teaching Methods

The learning unit includes the main potential-controlled analytical techniques and their applications, especially regarding electrogenerated conducting polymers. Laboratory experiments will also carried out in order to allow students to learn and experience fundamental topics in this field.
