Verification of learning:

The exam is oral and will focus on some questions related to each module. The student must demonstrate that he has primarily acquired the basic knowledge and skills relating to the epidemiological, pathogenetic, diagnostic and prophylaxis aspects of the required diseases considering the general concepts of epidemiology, features of the planned diseases, diagnostic procedures, control measures, biosecurity and public health.
During the exam it is necessary that: a) the student expresses himself correctly in a scientific language (DOC 1.4), b) demonstrates that he knows, in the various aspects required, the pathologies in the syllabus and that he is able to integrate the preparatory knowledge indicated with the subject in question (DOC 2.5, 2.6), c) shows that he is able to face in a coordinated, effective, coherent way and with proper solutions the problems related to prevention, control and eradication of contagious diseases and the safeguard of animal and human health (DOC 1.3, 2.7, 2.9, 2.10, 2.12)

Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide and make the student acquire:
1. basic knowledge of Veterinary Epidemiology preparatory to understanding the events related to the development and spread of Infectious Diseases of domestic and wild animals, the possible correlations with human ones based on the concept of "One Health" and the principles of Veterinary Public Health with a view to safeguarding and promoting health in the veterinary field (DOC 1.10) through the application of adequate risk assessment and management measures (DOC 1.3) and the ethical and legal principles underlying the veterinary profession(DOC 1.1).
2. the general principles underlying the main control measures for infectious diseases, the problems connected with their implementation (DOC 1.36) and biosecurity (DOC 1.28). Make the student aware of the importance of contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the veterinary field and of becoming personally capable and protagonist (DOC 1.10)
3. a view of the most important animal infectious diseases (multispecies, ruminants, pigs), their characteristics and possible epidemiological and ecopathological sceneries, information on the national and international epidemiological situation (DOC 2.10), to provide the student with the interpretative tools of the interaction and evolution of infectious diseases in animal populations and the risks of zoonoses (DOC 2.5, 2.6).
4. knowledge and skills on the methods of carrying out diagnostic activities, in particular in livestock diseases, (DOC 1.15, 1.21, 1.24), of the different types of prophylaxis measures and the comprehension of their choice and applicability on the basis of the scientific, logical, economic and epidemiological approach in order to the promotion of animal health and welfare (DOC 1.3,1.32,1.36,2.99).
5. the guidelines of biosecurity measures and control of infectious diseases (DOC 1.28, 1.36), also from a regulatory point of view (DOC 2.7), with particular reference to the protection of human health

Contents

Lectures: Basic concepts on etiology, epidemiology, immunology, diagnosis, prophylaxis and control of infectious diseases especially for those of viral origin or from unconventional agents (DOC 2.5). Throughout the course special reference will be made to the principles and biosecurity measures for the protection of farms as well as individual and personnel (DOC 1.28). In addition, the main rules laid down in national and international legislation and the principles of disease prevention and animal welfare will be analysed (DOC 1.1, 1.3., 2.7, 2.9)
In this perspective, also taking into account the limited number of available ECTS credits, only some selected diseases will therefore be treated, considered relevant from the point of view of socio-economic impact and/or for their peculiar epidemiological, ecopathological, zoonosic or emerging features (DOC 2.5., 2.6) and that show epidemiological, pathogenic, clinical scenarios differentiated and as representative as possible of the diverse and complex world of infectious diseases.
