Expected learning outcomes
The aim of the module is to provide and make the student acquire:
1. basic knowledge of the possible interactions between viruses and animal populations, including human (zoonoses) from the "One Health" perspective (DOC 1.10) and the ethical and legal principles underlying the veterinary profession(DOC 1.1)
2. an overview of the most important viral diseases of animals (multispecies, ruminants, pigs), the relative features and possible epidemiological and ecologic and pathological scenarios, the related national and international epidemiological situation (DOC 2.10), in order to make the student acquire interpretative tools of the interaction and evolution of the viral diseases in animal populations and the related risks of zoonoses. (DOC 2.5, 2.6)
3. knowledge and skills on how to carry out diagnostic activities, mainly in animal groups (DOC 1.15, 1.21, 1.24) and the different types of prophylactic measures and the understanding of how they must be chosen and applicated on the basis of the scientific, logical, economic and epidemiological approach according to promote animal health and welfare (DOC 1.3, 1.32, 1.36, 2.9)
4. the broad principles that inform the guidelines for the control of the infectious diseases and the biosecurity measures (DOC 1.28, 1.36), according with the rules relating to animal movement, notifiable and reportable diseases (DOC 2.7), with particular reference to the safeguard of human health.

Contents

Syllabus
Lectures: Basic concepts on etiology, epidemiology, immunology, diagnosis, prophylaxis and control of infectious diseases especially for those of viral origin or from unconventional agents (DOC 2.5). Throughout the course special reference will be made to the principles and biosecurity measures for the protection of farms as well as individual and personnel (DOC 1.28). In addition, the main rules laid down in national and international legislation and the principles of disease prevention and animal welfare will be analysed (DOC 1.1, 1.3., 2.7, 2.9)
In this perspective, also taking into account the limited number of available ECTS credits, only some selected diseases will therefore be treated, considered relevant from the point of view of socio-economic impact and/or for their peculiar epidemiological, ecopathological, zoonosic or emerging features (DOC 2.5., 2.6) and that show epidemiological, pathogenic, clinical scenarios differentiated and as representative as possible of the diverse and complex world of viral diseases. Some of the listed diseases will not be requested during the exam. In any case, it is advisable to have at least a general knowledge of them (in italics underlined).

Rhabdoviridae: Rabbia, Stomatite vescicolare.

Flaviviridae: Encefalite West Nile, Peste suina classica, Diarrea virale del bovino, Border disease.
Retroviridae: Maedi-Visna, artrite encefalite caprina, Adenomatosi polmonare della pecora, leucosi bovina enzootica, immunodeficienza bovina.
Reoviridae: Blue tongue, Peste equina, Malattia Emorragica del cervo, infezioni da rotavirus.
Picornaviridae: afta epizootica, malattia di Teschen, malattia vescicolare del suino, sindrome SMEDIA.
Caliciviridae: esantema vescicolare del suino, malattia emorragica del coniglio, sindrome della lepre bruna europea.

Practical activities: For the current year, practical activities will necessarily take place on Teams platform. Case reports will be presented together with how to carry out breeding visits. Biosecurity measures provided for both personal protection and prophylaxis purposes will be described and discussed (DOC 1.1, 1.3, 1.15, 1.24, 1.28, 1.36). It may also be proposed to examine iconographic material and video clips related to clinical and epidemiological situations related to the pathologies of the program. Part of the activity will be aimed at deepening some "real" cases to which students will have to propose adequate answers according to the principles of "problem solving" (DOC 1.36, 2.1, 2.9, 2.10, 2.12).

Assessment methods
The examination will focus on the discussion about one of the pathologies indicated in the program and, if necessary, of a further pathology. The student must show that he has acquired the knowledge of the epidemiological, pathogenetic, diagnostic and prophylactic aspects of the required pathology in the light of the general principles of control of infectious diseases and the principles of biosecurity and public health measures.
During the exam it is necessary that: a) the student expresses himself correctly with a scientific language (DOC 1.4), b) demonstrates that he knows, in the various aspects required, the pathologies in the syllabus and that he is able to integrate the preparatory knowledge indicated with the subject in question (DOC 2.5, 2.6), c) shows that he is able to face in a coordinated, effective, coherent way and with appropriate solutions the problems connected to the prevention, control and eradication of diffusive diseases and the protection of animal and human health (DOC 1.3, 2.7, 2.9, 2.10, 2.12)
