The student must have basic knowledge relating to Chemistry and Biochemistry, to the morphology and physiology of the various organs and systems, to Microbiology and to General Pathology. In addition, to access the exam, the student must have passed the Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology and General Pathology exam.

Objectives

During the course of Pharmacology the following aspects are evaluated: the classification of different active ingredients; the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics; the study of therapeutic and/or toxic effects, as well as the main therapeutic indications. The student acquires knowledge on the sub-cellular and molecular actions of drugs in correlation with pharmacological effects that constitute the rational requirement of therapy.
The course stimulates students to acquire basic knowledge on the action of drugs; to provide the cognitive tools for a good use of the drug; to provide knowledge on the legislation that regulates the use of the veterinary drug (how to prescribe a veterinary drug). In this way the student can develop the necessary skills for a rational and responsible use of the drug in the clinical practice.

Contents

Lectures (45 hours)
General Pharmacology: definitions and branches of Pharmacology. Origin and nature of drugs. Pharmaceutical formulations. Routes of administration. Pharmacokinetics: absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. Drug-protein binding. Principles of pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics: receptor-mediated actions (transduction mechanisms, regulators of the receptor-translation system, drug-receptor interactions) and actions not mediated by receptors. Nature of the pharmacological action and factors able to modify its action. Changes in sensitivity to drugs.
Special Pharmacology: physiopharmacological bases. Neurotransmission drugs. Pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system. Central Nervous System drugs: anesthetics, hypnotics and sedatives, antiepileptics, opioid analgesics, neuroleptics and analectics. Pharmacology of autacoids: histamine and antihistamine drugs; Steroid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Cardiovascular system pharmacology. Renal Pharmacology. Respiratory System Pharmacology. Pharmacology of the gastrointestinal system.

Practical training (15 hours)
Practical training sessions take place in the basic didactic laboratory and in the computer room. Practical training sessions are carried out in 3 groups; each group consists of a number of 10-12 students to better guarantee the quality of teaching.
Topics of practical training sessions:
- Calculation of dosage of pharmaceutical formulations. Calculation of the dilutions of pharmaceutical formulations. Enzymatic assays. Galenic preparations for veterinary use. Use of the veterinary drug manual for the prescription of drugs. Electronic prescription of veterinary drugs. Experimental animal models: animal housing for experimental use; legislation and welfare of laboratory animals used in the research.

In the health emergency phase of COVID-19, both lectures and practical teaching will be carried out in synchronous mode using the Microsoft Teams platform during the hours set by the calendar. The hours of practical training sessions, carried out synchronously using the Microsoft Teams platform, will be organized in a single group of students according to the hours set by the calendar.
