Assessment Methods

Verification of learning:

Non-attending students: written test (essay questions).
Attending students: oral exam. Students learning will be also assessed through class discussions, short essays and active participation in field activites.

Objectives

The course aims to:
a) understand the formation of urban societies, by analysing some classics of Sociology, such as Max Weber, Georg Simmel and the early School of Chicago;
b) focus the attention on the most recent social transformations related to globalization;
d) practice the techniques of direct observation, in order to detect some changes in micro urban areas such as, for example, in urban public spaces.

Contents

Classes (30 hours) will be organized into two parts:
The first part will be dedicated to the general frame of the discipline, with a focus on the origins: the city in Max Weber, the spatial approach of Georg Simmel and the ecological approach in different phases.
The second part will analyze the major changes in urban societies, with specific reference to globalization. This part we include a micro field-observation.

Teaching Methods

Classes will be given with the aid of powerpoint presentations and a selection of documentaries about the course topics. Further readings will be made available online in the learning platform at dissuf.uniss.it. Classes will be integrated with field activities and researches.
