Algebra and basic mathematics; units of measure, conversions and equivalences; proportions; first and second degree equations; decimal numbers, significant digits and rounding; scientific notation; powers of ten and logarithms base ten; dimensional analysis. Basic concepts in general chemistry.
Two comprehension tests will be held during the course, in order to check the student's learning process. The tests will be about stoichiometric calculations. Positive results in all the exercises will exempt the student form the written part of the final exam. The final exam is composed by a written (stoichiometry exercises) and an oral part on the whole program.
The course will give the student the tools to comprehend the chemical reactivity, the processes and the stoichiometric calculations, relatively to the field of inorganic chemistry. At the end of the course the student will have acquired the competences needed to face and solve questions on the moles, concentrations of the solutions, pH. Moreover, the student will have learnt inorganic compounds nomenclature and reaction balancing.
Atomic and molecular mass. Calculation of the mean atomic mass. Molar mass, mole. Calculation of the minimal formula, molecular formula and elemental composition. Concentration of the solutions. Reaction balancing. Redox reactions. Molar ratios. Limiting reagent. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. pH of acid, base and salt solutions. Buffer solutions.
