ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF CLASSICAL ART
Oral.
Knowledge of the archaeological and artistic record of the Roman provincial world, with particular regard to the area of Sardinia, and skill in analysing features and problems.
The archaeology of the Roman provinces. The making of the Roman empire, its organization and the administration of the provinces; the problem of «provincial art»: definition, history of studies and art-historical framing inside the Roman art.
Turris Libisonis (today’s Porto Torres) in the general frame of Roman Sardinia: the town planning, the architecture and the visual arts of the Roman colony and their relations with the records of Rome and Africa.
The course will consist of lectures and seminars accompanied by extensive illustrative material, which will be object of projections and will be left to students at the end of the course (set of power points on pen drive).

It is strongly recommended the use of an historical atlas of the ancient world.
Non-attending students are kindly requested to contact the teacher in advance (also using the contact details given afterwords) to agree on an organic study path, which will however include also part of the above mentioned texts.

Archaeological excavations. The teacher directs two Italian archaeological mission abroad: one in Romania, for the investigation of the Roman town of Ibida (Tulcea County, in Dobrogea. Website of the excavation http://www.arheologie-ibida.eu/); one in Tunisia, for the investigation of the Roman town of Numluli (Governorate of Béja). Students of Classical Archaeology will be invited to participate on the basis of the available resources.
