The enrolment at the course requires a basic knowledge of General and Organic Chemistry.
The students will be assessed through a written test with open questions and a practical test with the identification and description of a section of stem, root or leaf.
Learning the basic principles on plant structural organization and main functional processes. Identifying the relationships between structures and functions and interpreting plant adaptations to environmental factors. Reading the diversity under an evolutionary perspective. Using a proper and rigorous scientific language. Understanding the relationships among plants, man and environment. Strengthening the ability to operate an advanced bibliographic survey and to work efficiently as a member of a group.
Introduction to the plant world. Authotroph and eterotroph. Plants and atmosphere. Origin and diversity of plants. Cormophytes and tallophytes. Procarhyote and eukaryote cells. Plant cell and cycle. Meristems and adult tissues. Anatomy and morphology of stem, root and leaf. Specialization in relationship to functions. Plant adaptations. Plant cycles. Flower and sexual reproduction. Seeds and fruits. Metabolism: basic concepts. Respiration, photosintesis, water potential and water trasport. Relationships between plants, man and environment.
Observation of the morphology of the main organs on fresh material. Use of optical microscopes. Preparation of plant explants for examination by microscopy. Observation of plant cells. Observation of leaf epidermal tissues and plant tissues in sections of stems, roots and leaves.

Lectures, practicals, seminars. The lectures will support the practical activities. Practical activities will be carried out in the laboratory, and, if possible, outdoors, with the application of specific techniques. The discussion and the debate will be encouraged as well as the collaboration between students in the different activities.
