The technological development of information technology and the increasing availability of
databases and spatial information provided through BigData has played the role of catalyst of
cognitive and interpretative processes semi-automated in decision-making processes by means of
tools capable of identifying and extrapolating significant information purifying them from the
"background noise" and making them understandable to their users. In this sense, the development of
information design and visual design has encouraged interdisciplinary collaborations between
analysts and designers, creating benefits for academic research both in the realization of these tools
and in the interpretation of the results. In this sense, the course provides students with the main
technical and methodological content and the most advanced digital techniques of graphic
representation for the analysis, design and management of the territory and infographic visualization
of data and spatial information. The course is structured on three complementary and fundamental
macro topics within the branch of contemporary Geographic Information Science: the modern
Geographic Information System or GIS in the strict sense, electronic engine for data processing
(Tomlinson R. ); quantitative geography for the determination of spatial matrices between territorial
components and procedures for the analysis of territorial dynamics (Tobler WR.); information design
i.e. the methodologies and tools to present information in a way that makes it more accessible and
easily understandable to users (Tufte E.). Specifically, during the course we will discuss both the
theoretical postulates of the geographical analysis of data through different methodologies such as
interpolation (simple interpolation, Inverse Distance Weight, others), the spatialization of information
(simple and compound Kriging), and the analysis of networks in order to identify the dominant
spatial connections. The theoretical basis will find practical application within the GIS platforms
through exercises with the tool with particular attention to advanced database management both in
the use of vector data and raster matrices. Finally, through the practical/theoretical analysis of
different case studies, also based on previous personal researches, concerning several research topics,
the different modalities of interpretation and representation of the datasets will be examined and how
the ability to provide comprehensible information is strongly conditioned by the analysis
methodology used. Finally, the INSPIRE Directive of the European Union provides that for the
maximum sharing of geographical information between Member States, this information must
comply with certain standards or schemes, in this sense the main aspects of the Directive and its
implications will be dealt with in particular in the creation of official public information available on
GeoServers.
