Objectives

To acquire sound knowledge on the chemical, physico-chemical and biochemical properties of mineral and organic soil components. To acquire, by means of practical laboratory experience, the theory underpinning some of the most common analytical methods for the determination of soil physico-chemical properties.

Contents

Soil constituents: inorganic solid phases, soil organic matter, liquid and gaseous phases. Physical and morphological soil features: soil colour, texture, structure, porosity. Adsorption and cation/anion exchange. Soil pH. Anomalous soils: acidic, calcareous, saline and sodic soils. Chemical elements in soil: macro and microelements. Fertilizers, main mineral fertilizers.
