The learning methods adopted are designed to evaluate the technical knowledge on the management and feeding of equine. For this purpose, during course there will be 2 written tests with open-ended questions on the topics covered in class. For students who pass both tests in progress the exam is recorded without further evaluation. Students who have not done and/or passed the tests in progress they can be evaluated with oral exams, available on the base of official calendar and on extraordinary ones established by the teacher, that will be done orally.
In the event of suspension of the lectures for coronavirus, the teacher will carry out the 2 tests orally in video conference on the Teams platform.
Students must acquire the knowledge on the main equine Italian and foreign breeds as well as the morphological horse features. The students must have familiar with the issues related to genetic improvement of horse sports. They must be able to formulate rations for horses and learn husbandry techniques of the different categories of animals, as well as they must be informed on reproductive techniques and control systems of the reproductive activity of horses.
ETHNOLOGY AND HORSES ZOOGNOSTIC. Horse breeds. Horse zoognostic regions and morphological evaluation (6h).
GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF THE HORSE. Phenotypic traits and environmental effects on sports performance. Main problems in the genetic evaluation of sport horses (2h).
EQUINE REPRODUCTION. Reproductive features of the stallion and mare. Reproductive techniques in horses (6h).
FEEDING HORSES. Utilization of food and equines ration calculation. Nutritional needs and food intake. Assessment of body condition. Abnormal eating behaviors and food illness (10h).
MANAGEMENT OF THE MARE AND FOAL. Management of the mare during pregnancy and lactation. Neonatal care and management of the suckling foal. Foal husbandry (6h).
MANAGEMENT OF THE SPORT HORSE. Features of the muscle fibers. Nutrients for muscle work. Training level evaluation (4h).
PRATICAL ACTIVITIES. Ration calculation by manual technique and using xls software (4h). Visit to jumping horse farm (3h). Visit to race horse farm (3h). Film projection on reproductive aspects and on equine husbandry techniques (4h).

The course is based on theoretical lessons (about 70% of the course) integrated with classroom exercises on the formulation of rations for equines, and with field exercises, with visits to private farms and/or centers of regional research specialized in equine breeding. In addition to the recommended books, the teacher uses power point slides, which are be sent by email to the attending students on the first day of class, and on request also to non-attending students. Films will be shown on equine livestock.
In the event of suspension of the lectures for coronavirus, the teacher will upload the Power Point lecture slides with the attached audio recording to the Teams platform.
The teacher is available for any information on the course and teaching explanation on the topics covered in class. Compatibly with other academic commitments, availability is guaranteed on any working days, by contacting the teacher directly at his office or at the email address.
In the event of suspension of the lectures for coronavirus, the teacher will periodically organize video conference meetings on the Teams platform for all clarifications of the lectures held.
