Students are recommended the basic knowledge of Greek History and Greek Archaeology and the history of the art.

Final oral exam. A verify in itinere is scheduled; it will be an integral part of the final exam.

Objectives

The course aims to offer the instruments to know the phenomenon of the Western Greek ‘colonization’, the phases of development, the urban and monumental appearance of the principal cities of Southern Italy and Sicily built by the Greeks.
At the end of this course the student will be able to face critically the themes and the problems illustrated and to analyze the Western Greek colonies on the basis of the related historical-social-economic and geographic-environmental contexts.

Contents

The course will examine the Greek colonial dynamics toward the West and offer a general framework of the colonial structures, the territory, the main artistic expressions and the material culture in Magna Graecia and Sicily.

Teaching Methods

Face to face lessons, seminars, laboratory on pottery.
The students will play an active part in the lessons illustrating (by powerpoint) some themes related to the course.
