Course Title Beyond What Is Said: Doing Things with Words.
The course is divided into two parts.
In the first part (15 hours) the distinctive features of Pragmatics in relation to others linguistic disciplines, especially Semantics, will be firstly outlined. Secondly we will tackle some of the core pragmatic phenomena involved in communication (contextual dependence, speech acts, conversational implicatures, presuppositions) and the main theories thereof.
The second part (15 hours) will have the form of a workshop, during which students will present and discuss some group works consisting in applying some of the notions learned in the first part to the analysis of different kind of visual or written messages, such as advertisements or political speeches .
