Prerequisites:

Biochemical concepts on structural and functional organization of cells and of metabolic processes in the animals; concept of osmosis; understanding of how enzymes and hormones work; knowledge of the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the cardiocirculatory, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems.

Objectives

Physiology studies the functioning of the animal organism, and how it adapts to the environment at the molecular, cellular, organic and individual level. By the end of the course, you will learn the principles of osmoregulation and excretion, of respiration, circulation and reproduction. In addition, you will understand the fundamental concepts of animal physiology of the systems studied, how these systems are incorporated in the organism adaptation to the environment in the different animals, and you will acquire expertise in the literature revision, in the discussion and in answering to the main questions on animal physiology. You will also attain and deepen the basics of ethology applications to veterinary medicine with particular regard to the registration of the behavior of animals and specially of farm species and animal welfare

Contents

Physiology
THE BLOOD: characteristics, plasmatic protein, red blood cells. Emostasis, blood coagulation and platelets.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: function of the myocardium, cardiac cycle, electrocardiography, hemodynamic, blood pressure, trans-capillary exchanges, venous system, central control of circulation.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: respiratory mechanics, alveolar ventilation, control of respiration, transport of gas in the blood.
URINARY SYSTEM: glomerular filtration, tubular functions, clearances, concentration and dilution of the urine, acid-basic regulation.
REPRODUCTION: puberty, oestral cycle, follicle and corpora lutes growth and function, regulation of spermatogenesis, hormones actions and functions, fertilization, pregnancy.
Practical lessons: blood sampling and analysis, auscultation, collection and evaluation of gametes quality.

Ethology
Introduction to ethology and study of animal behavior, the ethogram, direct and indirect observation. Imprinting innate mechanisms triggering, key stimuli. Learning, the mechanisms of learning, association, processes and types of learning, learning by trial and error, the reinforcement concept. Animal communication, the signal and its significance, the triad of communication: the sender, the receiver and the signal. Specific behaviors: Reproductive behavior, maternal behavior, social behavior and alimentary behavior. Animal WelfareEthological indicators of welfare in different domesticated species. Evaluation of atypia, behavioral related to animal suffering. The horse, bovine, ovine and caprine, pig, dog and cat behavior.
