The objectives of the course are to provide knowledge about the problems of extreme inbreeding and selective pressure in pets. At the end of the course the student will know and recognize the most common hereditary diseases in the different breeds of dogs and cats. In particular, he/she will have acquired the skills to highlight the genetic basis of these pathologies, and to carry out the most appropriate screening on the individual subject and / or his progeny, through the acquisition of the necessary tools to identify sick subjects and, where possible, the disease carriers in order to minimize the risks of serious diseases within purebred canine and feline populations, with particular attention to the final option to be given to the owners or breeders of "NO BREEDING" or "BREEDER OPTION" linked to the type of disease highlighted and its severity. For this purpose, he / she will acquire the necessary skills to correctly read the information contained in a pedigree, assess the degree of kinship between possible breeder and then make the most correct choice of subjects to mate in order to avoid the most widespread and ascertained genetic pathologies. Day One Competence acquired 1.11: Demonstrate ability to cope with incomplete information, deal with contingencies, and adapt to change.
