The written examination will require the identification of an unknown substance on the basis of the Mass, IR and proton and 13C NMR spectra and, at the discretion of the teacher, will be completed by an oral exam on the theoretical and practical aspects of the spectroscopic techiques
The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of modern spectroscopic techniques used to perform the structural analysis of organic molecules
Mass spectrometry. Principles and outlines of instrumentation. Ionisation by electron impact and chemical ionisation. Mass analysers. Interpretation of EI mass spectra. Modes of fragmentation. Fragmentation of common functional groups. Infrared spectroscopy. Harmonic and anharmonic oscillators. Selection rules for vibrational transitions. Group frequencies and analysis by IR. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Introduction and theory. Chemical shift and spin-spin coupling. Proton on heteroatoms. Chemical and magnetic equivalence. Virtual coupling, chirality and spin decoupling. Frontal lessons and laboratory. The purpose of this laboratory experiment is to gain hands-on experience in the operation and interpretation of IR, MS and NMR spectra to elucidate structural details. Attendance to teaching activities is mandatory and only in exceptional cases, absences of more than 20%, will be tolerated. The procedures for verifying attendance will be carried out by verifying the actual presence of students in the class
1) Readiness to offer individual assistance also in English or Spanish languages to incoming students
2) Availability of supporting material and bibliographic references also in english language.
3) Readiness to accept examination of incoming students also in a foreign language (English or Spanish)
