Verification of learning:

The exam consists of:
1. a written test consisting of three open-ended questions and the maximum vote is 15/30.
2. An oral test consisting of a discussion of the written paper and questions about the program.
Distance exam modality - COVID-19 period: The exam consists of an oral test.
Students must submit a paper regarding three real case: a) process innovation, b) product innovation 3) eco-sustainable innovation. Please use Word in Times New Roman 12 font and do not exceed 1200 words. The paper have to be sent via email five day before the date of the exam to this address : gmanca@uniss.it.
The basic knowledge of all subjects and the demonstration of ability to transfer knowledge in case studies are needed for the minimum grade. In addition to obtain the maximum mark, the correct use of the technical language, the ability to analyze the items dealt with in the course and to make connections between the topics of the program, is required.

Basic knowledge on all the subjects of the program is required to obtain the minimum pass mark. To have the maximum score, in addition to the correct use of the technical language, the ability to critically analyze the different subjects of the program is required.

Objectives

Students have to know the new technologies, the processes of innovation, and the tools to optimize processes and promote continuous improvement in compliance with the principles of quality, sustainability and ethics. Understanding the role of innovation and technologies to improve quality and strengthen the competitiveness of companies.
At the end of the course, students will have acquired:
1. Knowledge and understanding: Understanding the different types of innovation and the basic principles of the new technologies. Knowing the basic principles of quality and environmental and ethical sustainability. Understanding the different aspects of quality and the impact of technological innovation on products/services quality improvement and on business performances. Comprehension of the basic techniques to implement quality certification systems.
2. Ability to apply knowledge: ability to discuss the most relevant technologies in the production processes and their positive and negative factors; been able to analyze regulations and standards concerning quality certification processes in a critical manner. To know how use the technical language concerning the quality certification processes. To be able to apply the acquired knowledge through the elaboration of case studies.
3. Autonomous judgement: capability to find appropriate tools to deal with issues and problems related to innovation, quality and environmental sustainability in a modern and dynamic organization.
4. Ability to communicate on quality issues with specialists and non-specialists, using the appropriate technical language.
5. Learning skills: learning skills needed for further study of the subject with a high degree of autonomy.

Consequences of technological change. Technical and economic development. Impact of technology on business strategies. Importance of technology for quality improvement. Technological innovation. Transfer of technology. Indicators to measure innovation capacity and competitiveness of an economic system (with particular reference to the Italian context). Environmental policy. Environmental sustainability and eco innovation. Green economy. Circular economy. Tools for sustainable development and the environmental qualit5y (LCA, LCA, ISO 14001 standard, EMAS Regulation, Ecolabel). Technologies for the production of energy. Renewable and not-renewable resources. The energy efficiency market. The concept of quality. Quality certification. The different aspect of quality for a company (principles of the standard ISO 9001, health and safety)

Information on the case studies dealt in class are present in the web site of the company interested (for example Nike, Tetrapack, cork in Sardinia, Edilana, Tesla motors etc.). On the day of the oral examination, the students will have to submit a paper regarding a case study on innovation of product, process, and environmentally friendly.
