ARCHAEOZOOLOGY
Each student will write a small thesis and its valutation will contribute in the final oral exam.
The course is designed to accompany the student in the study of the Zooarchaeology. Its definition, application field, relationship among other sciences, and their modern perspectives are described. From the first few lessons, and for most of the extension of the course will be given great importance to the methodology followed in order to make a modern zooarchaeological study. Particular attention will be paid to the future research fieds of archaeology.
Definition, methods and aims of Zooarchaeology. Evolution, history and general view of Zooarchaeology in the world and Italy. Animal remains from archaeological contexts: bones, teeth and shells. The identification of the animal remains, species and death age. The reconstruction of the animal morphological features and their economic role in the past. Domestication, breeding, hunting and gathering. The marks in the hard animal tissues. Recent perspectives of zooarchaeological studies: paleopathology, paleohistology, paleoparassitology. The study of the ancient DNA.
