Objectives

BEEKEEPING. Students will acquire knowledge on the importance of honey bees and beekeeping in the forest environment, and on the raw materials supplied for the hive productions as nectar, honeydew, pollen and resins.
The course also provides theoretical and practical insights on the main hive products: honey, pollen, royal jelly and propolis.

MUSHROOMS AND TRUFFLES: Provide students with knowledge on the ecological and economic importance of fungi in forest ecosystems, with particular reference to the cultivation of edible mushrooms and truffles

Contents

BEEKEEPING: Insights and case study on nectar/pollen/resin sources and potential honey yield in forestry; honey processing; composition and characteristics of honey (melissopalinological, organoleptic and chemical - physical); other hive products.
MUSHROOMS AND TRUFFLES: Edible mushrooms and truffles, economic importance. Systematics and biology of Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes fungi. Ecology of edible fungi. Truffles and truffle farming (planning, planting of the truffle, cultural care and harvesting). The cultivation of mushrooms of food and medicinal interest.
