A basic knowledge of the swimming environment and its features together with a basic practice of the swimming styles is required.

Assessment Methods

Verification of learning:

- Technical, practical evaluation after pool class, expressed by the following grades:
• Below average
• Average
• Good
• Excellent
- Questionnaire evaluation, to administer just before the class ends.
- Oral exam.
The oral exam will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
• relevance and effectiveness of the answers according to the programme content;
• knowlwdge mastery level;
• correct use of technical lexis and term precision;
• relevance and level of answer development.
The final evaluation will take into account:
A) Practical evaluation (details will be given during practice class).
The student without practical evaluation must contact the teacher before exam.
B) Questionnaire evaluation
C) Oral exam
The final evaluation is espressed in thirtieths.

Objectives

The course aims at providing the students with a technical, practical water-based competence in the pool space, with a consistent knowledge acquisition useful to both introducing the young people to the swimming and water-related sporting disciplines and reinforcing the abilities of the ones who already practice them.
Also, the following skills will be acquired:
• increasing physical activities in general and their improvement in water environment as essential features for the development of a young person’s personality;
• enhancing knowledge on basic motor schemes as a necessary tool to reach a physical training as sound and wide as possible.

Contents

General section
¥ Notion of swimming pool and length;
¥ Regulations of reference on swimming pool construction;
¥ Guidelines on swimming pool hygiene;
¥ Safety issues;
¥ Education and a new culture of water;
¥ Educational and pedagogical aspects of swimming pool activities.

Specific theoretical section
¥ Educational and methodological principles of water familiarisation;
¥ General educational aspects in teaching swimming;
¥ Technique and teaching of the swimming styles (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly stroke) and their relative starts and turns;
¥ General technical and educational guidelines of surf lifesaving, water polo, diving, synchronised swimming;
¥ Training techniques applied to swimming disciplines.

Pool practice section
¥ The theoretical course is complemented by practical pool exercises and training, according to beginners and advanced levels, upon agreement with sport associations which practice introduction to swimming.

Teaching material
In addition to the adopted textbooks and the relative suggested bibliography to help the students in their research and analysis, the teaching material will be prepared by the teacher (slides, lecture notes, questionnaires, and so on).

Training activities
The training activities will enable the students to have their on-field experience and examine the principles learned in class properly, promoting their enrichment and completing their educational pathway, in view of the attainment of the federal licence.
