The course aims to introduce the student to the world of chemistry and its importance in technology and in the development of the society. From the "microscopic", the atomic model of matter, to the "macroscopic". The goal is to make students understand how chemical knowledge is useful for many aspects of daily life that involve the environment in which we live.
Atomic structure and atomic theory. The periodic classification of the elements. Periodic table and periodical properties. Chemical properties of the elements and their most important compounds. Uranium and its use, safety and the environment. Rare earths. Essential elements and toxic elements. Interaction of human activity with the environment. The effects of the combustion of fossil fuels on air quality. Water in the world. Analyses. Water purification systems. Arsenic pollution around the world. Particulate matter and metal nanoparticles in the environment. Raw material and development: methods of mineral extraction and impact on the environment.
