Verification of learning:

A colloquium concerning lectures and laboratory experiences will be adopted in order to evaluate acquired knowledge based on educational objectives.
Intermediate tests will be performed to verify the evolving of the knowledge process during the course.

Objectives

At the end of the course, every student will know fundamentals, features and applications of some instrumental analytical techniques, namely: potentiometry, atomic absorption, molecular absorption in UV-Vis and IR, molecular emission spectrophotometry.

Contents

Calibration methods in instrumental analysis.
Potentiometric methods. Electrodes and potentials. Reference electrodes. Working electrodes: electrodes for pH measurements; redox electrodes; selective electrodes. Potentiometric determinations.
Spectrophotometry. Electromagnetic radiation. Molecular absorption: transmittance and absorbance; electronic transitions; absorption spectra; instruments. Atomic absorption: spectra; instruments and components; interferences. Molecular luminescence: radiant and non radiant relaxation; structural characteristics; instruments. IR spectroscopy: IR absorption; vibrational transitions; vibrational degrees of freedom; selection rules; dispertion, FT and reflectance instruments.

Teaching Methods

Lectures. Numerical exercises on practical cases. Laboratory experiments. The teaching activities will be performed in presence or remote mode, according to the healthcare situation and recommendations of the University of Sassari.
