Verification of learning:

The oral test consists of an interview between the candidate and the lecturer. The candidate should be know the principal issues of the course and the texts and the essays proposed in bibliography. He should be able to read, translate, contextualize and analyze the texts proposed during the course.

Objectives

The student will be able to acquire knowledge and understanding of the historical evolution of the Greek language and its functioning on the synchronic level, with attention to the various perspectives of analysis (phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic). At the end of the course the student will be able to apply a valid textual analysis method.

Contents

A first reflection will be developed on the competences attributed to the γραμματικὴ τέχνη in antiquity and on Greek grammar as an autonomous discipline. This reflection is a necessary premise for the analysis of the Greek language both in its grammatical characteristics and in its dialectal variants that become functional for the various literary genres. During the course, representative texts will be analysed: Homer's and Hesiod's epos, lyric poetry, historiography, 5th century theatre, Attic oratory, up to the Hellenistic koine reflected in the production between the 3rd and 1st century.
