Mandatory prerequisite to follow the course and be able to attend the exam is the knowledge of the topics presented in the following preliminary courses:
- Histology and Anatomy
- Molecular Biology
A good knowledge of spoken Italian is also required from the student coming from abroad, provided that the lessons are held in Italian. However, at the request of students occasionally explanations of particularly difficult topics can be provided in English
Assessment method for student preparation is by an Oral Exam examination at the end of the course concerning all the topics that are specified in the program. However students are given the chance to split the program, and the exam, in two quantitatively equivalent parts.
Students have to master the principles of cell physiology, single organ functions and the physiology of whole apparatuses and of their integrated functions.

- Masticatory System physiology
Homeostasis of physiological functions. Blood composition and functions. Plasma organic and inorganic components. Blood cells hemopoiesis,The red blood cells and the hemoglobin. Hemostasis, platelet adhesion and aggregation. Blood coagulation and general description coagulation events. Fibrinolysis. Coagulation tests.
Nervous and muscle systems.
Excitation, conduction and transmission of the nerve impulse. Principles of bioelectricity. Membrane and action potentials origin. Properties of the nervous fibers. Synaptic ultrastructure and neurotransmitters. Neuromuscular end plate. Excitation and contraction coupling. Muscle contraction and energy generating systems. The autonomic nervous system. Sensory systems physiology. Sensory receptors. Touch, pain and temperature receptors characteristics. Proprioceptive receptors. Spinal cord organization. Transmission of somatosensory information to higher centers. Posture control and muscle tone. The voluntary movement. Hearing, olfaction, taste and vestibular functions physiology.

Lessons are held in the first semester of the second year(October to January)for a total of 80 hours and 10 university credits. Materials used for lessons are presented to the students mostly in the form of Power Point presentations. Transparents are also occasionally used. Teaching material is made available to the students at the end of the cycle of lessons concerned with that specific topic of the program. Previous a preliminary examination of the scientific contents, web sites are also suggested for consultation.Lessons are provided in a face to face fashion, attendance is mandatory and students have to have 70% attendance in order to be admitted to enroll to the final exam.
