Objectives

The learning objectives of this module is the knowledge of the molecular basis of the genetic information and its expression; the knowledge of the traits inheritance; the knowledge of the main quantitative genes involved in the milk and in meat production, on the basis of the specific productive attitude. At the end of the course the student will be able to use the main techniques of molecular biology to genotype the animals for the main genes involved in the production traits.

Contents

Outline of genetics: DNA, genes and chromosomes, the genetic code, the genome of the livestock animals, genetic polymorphisms, non-coding DNA used in zoothecnics (kinship test, fingerprinting DNA), mithocondrial DNA, QTL, genetics markers. Methods of polimorphisms survey: analysis of the mutation point, PCR, sequencing, RFLP, DHPLC, SSCP. Qualitative vs quantitative traits. Traits inheritance and variability in animals population. Importance of mutations. Major genes involved in animal productions.
