Oral exam
The lectures intend to provide basic knowledge of modern German literature and culture and to illucidate common interartistic and transcultural stylistic currents in modern european aesthetic culture.
Aesthetic culture and 'Deutsche Klassik'/ German Classicism
In western aestetic culture the imitation of ancient life and culture has beeen a frequent phenomenon and prominent strategy from Italian Renaissance to European Neo-Classicism of the 18th and 19th century. How to explain th curious interest for forms of art and literature of such remote periods? The lectures will discuss the various forms of classicism, which can be observed in the realm of German literature of the 18th and 19th century (and parallel manifestations in the other arts: architecture, painting, music). Of special interest will be the so called 'Deutsche' or 'Weimarer Klassik' (Goethe, Schiller, Kleist, Hölderlin etc.).
