Knowledge of topographic map reading. Entry level knowledge of trigonometry and Euclidean geometry. Knowledge of stereographic projection methods. Additional skills include trekking, hiking.
fieldwork, realization of a geological map of an assigned area. Alternatively, the candidate due will be oral exhamination.
Orienteering, use of topographic maps. Interpretation of rocks at the hand specimen- and outcrop-scale. Interpretation of the main deformational structures (folds, faults). Drawing and interpretation of geological maps and geological sections.
The class of Geological mapping consists of three main sections. The first one will show the cartographic features of the main rock types (magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary). The second part includes both fieldwork and lab training. Fieldwork will focus on geological mapping of a specific area. The third and last section of the class is fully devoted to the making and interpretation of geological section
