Objectives

To give comprehensive basic information of chemistry of the elements with references to applicative aspects. To rationalize the diversity of the chemical phenomena with the help of the periodic table and physical chemistry.
Strengthen the skills necessary in an inorganic chemistry laboratory.

Contents

General course contents: Aspects of structure and bonding in main group chemistry. Lewis acids and bases, HSAB theory. Systematic description of the chemistry of main group elements: periodic trends of chemical and physical properties, bonding, preparation and uses of the elements and their binary hydrides, oxides and halides and their reactions. Preparation and uses of the main compounds of industrial interest.

Lessons and laboratory experiences

Attendance of the labs is compulsory and of the lessons highly recommended. If required, the teacher is available to give explanations in english. An English text of main group chemistry is also included in the list of the recommended texts.
During the semester, learning will be assessed by at least two written tests comprising a series of multiple-choice questions and some open questions which require brief but exhaustive answers.
