Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will know the main chemical, structural, magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the transition metal compounds. Six exercitations in the laboratory will allow the students to know the behaviour of the most important first-row transition metals (vanadium, chromium, manganese, cobalt, nickel and copper) and the main spectroscopic (EPR, electronic absorption and IR spectroscopy), instrumental (thermogravimetric and elemental anlysis, magnetic moment measurements) and computational (DFT simulations) methods in the study of the inorganic compounds.

Contents

Transition elements. Coordination chemistry: ligands, number and coordination geometry, nomenclature, isomerism, chelate, macrocyclic and cryptand effect. Crystalline field theory: applications to the geometry, magnetic, structural and thermodynamic effects, Jahn-Teller distortion. Molecular orbital theory: rationalization of the spectrochemical series. Electronic spectra. Transition metal compounds in high, intermediate and low oxidation state. Metal carbonyls. Introduction to the organometallic chemistry. Chemistry of the first-row transition metal elements.

Six exercitations in the laboratory: complexation of Cu(II) with tetraglycine(UV-vis), equilibrium between octahedral and square planar geometry in Ni(II) complexes (UV-vis), synthesis of complexes of Co(III) (UV-vis and IR),synthesis of the solid complex [Mn(acac)3](IR, thermogravimetric and elemental analysis), complexation of V(IV)O with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (EPR), characterization of metal carbonyls of Cr (DFT simulations).
