Written test and oral examination, in conjuction with the exam of Laboratory of General and Inorganic Chemistry (the evaluation of both exams will merge in a single score).

Objectives

GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY:This course provides the basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry. It aims to introduce the student to the learning of the matter properties in the different states, its compositions and structure, bonding theories, intermolecular interactions and elementary electrochemistry. Moreover, the course deals with the basic principles in the elements and compounds properties.
LABORATORY OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY:At the end of the course the student will have knowledge of the fundamental laws that govern chemical transformations, will understand the concept of mole and learn to reason about chemical reactions in terms of particles.
The student will acquire the mathematical knowledge that will enable him/her to solve various problems of basic chemistry.
He/she will learn all the safety rules of a chemistry laboratory.

GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY: Atomic structure. Quantum theory. Hydrogen atom and atomic orbitals. Polyelectronic atoms. Periodic table and periodic properties of elements. Molecular geometry. Bonding theories. Covalent bond. Molecular orbitals. Ionic bonding. Metallic bonding. Van der Waals interactions. Hydrogen bonding. Solids, liquids and gases. Basic electrochemistry.
LABORATORY OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY:Atoms and molecules, atomic and molecular mass. Chemical equations, balancing methods. Quantitative reactions between reactants and products. Gaseous systems. Solutions. Concentrations and dilutions. Colligative properties. Chemical equilibrium. Equilibrium shift and Le Chatelier's principle. Strong and weak acids and bases. pH. Equilibria of hydrolysis. Buffer solutions. Acid-base titrations. Solubility equilibria.
