At the end of the course, students are expected to be familiar with the main ocular disorders, the differential diagnosis of "red eye", ambyopia, the role of the eye in the early diagnosis of important systemic diseases (i.e. multiple sclerosis, diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis, collagenopathies, etc.), and the main surgical procedures in ophthalmology (keratoplasty, cataract surgery, retinal detachment surgery). Furthermore, students should develop suffcient knowledge to suspect important ophtalmic and neuro-ophthalmological emergencies, such as acute angle-closure glaucoma, central retinal aertery occlusion, intracavernal carotid artery aneurism rupture.
