Prerequisites:

Anatomy and physiology exams should be passed before the course.
Given the close dependence of Respiratory Diseases from pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, an excellent knowledge of the structure and function of this Systems is warmly recommended.
An excellent knowledge of the medical semeiotics is also recommended.
Knowledge of Human Anatomy and Physiology are essential to face the Course of vascular Surgery.

Objectives

The educational objective of the Teaching Unit is to train a "general practitioner" Doctor who has:
a) a multidisciplinary and integrated vision of the most common health and disease problems;
b) an education oriented to the prevention of the diseases;
c) a deep knowledge of the new demands of care and health, centered on the sick man, considered as a whole.

Contents

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Anatomy, physiology and physiopatology of the heart. Electrocardiography. Hypertension. Atherosclerosis and its risk factors. Acute coronary syndromes. Stable coronary artery disease. Acute ancd chronic heart failure. Arrhytmias. Sudden cardiac death. Valvular heart diseases. Endocarditis. Miocarditis. Cardiomyopathies. Pericardial syndromes. Congenic heart diseases. Cardiovascular pharmacology.
DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
1. Structure, function and immune defense of the Respiratory System;
2. Reasoned approach to the patient with dyspnoea, cough, hemoftoe, chest pain;
3. Main diagnostic techniques used in the diagnosis of the Respiratory Diseases: from the chest imaging to the lung function tests, fibrobronoscopy and its applications, cardio-respiratory monitoring tests;
4. Pulmonary obstructive diseases: bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis;
5. Polmomonary restrictive diseases: Idiopatic and secondary Interstitial lung diseases;
6. Pulmonary infections in the immunocompetent and immunocompromised patient. Tuberculosis;
7. Primitive and metastatic cancer of the chest;
8. Pulmonary vascular pathology: pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension;
9. Respiratory failure, Long term Oxygen therapy and non-invasive mechanical ventilation;
10. Pleural effusion and differential diagnosis;
11. Respiratory sleep disorders.

Subjects developed during frontal lessons are crucial: gross anatomy of the human vasculature, vascular clinical examination, vascular imaging, peripheral arterial disease, acute limbs ischemia, aortic and peripheral aneurysms, carotid disease and subclavian steal, and lower limb venous diseases.

Teaching Methods

The educational method adopted provides for the horizontal and vertical integration of knowledge. Starting from a strong cultural and methodological basis of the pre-clinical disciplines, the Student will aim to reach an early contact with the patient, the acquisition of a good clinical ability, an adequate human student-patient relationship, the ability to make adequate clinical decisions.
In order to achieve these objectives, will be necessary un adequate integration between:
a) Basic sciences, which must be broad and include knowledge of evolutionary biology, molecular biology, genetics, knowledge of the structure and function in normal conditions and the correct application of translational scientific research;
b) Knowledge of the pathological processes and of the mechanisms that cause them, also in order to set prevention, diagnosis and treatment;
c) Clinical practice through a wide use of tutorial teaching, capable of transforming theoretical knowledge into professional skills useful for knowing how to manage the complexity of the diseases;
d) Acquisition of a strong scientific and clinical methodology, aimed at solving individual and community health problems.

The Integrated Course provides a mandatory practical Students training for the disciplines of Pneumology and Cardiology.
